Why Pediatric Eye Exams Matter

Many childhood vision problems cannot be detected through school screenings or basic vision checks. Even children with “20/20 vision” may struggle with focusing, eye coordination, or visual processing. A comprehensive pediatric eye exam allows us to evaluate:
  • Visual clarity at near and distance
  • Eye alignment and coordination
  • Focusing ability and eye teaming
  • Early signs of nearsightedness (myopia) progression

Signs Your Child May Have a Vision Problem

Children don’t always know how to explain vision issues. Some signs are obvious, while others are subtle and often mistaken for attention or learning difficulties. Your child may benefit from an eye exam if they:
  • Avoid reading, coloring, or close-up activities
  • Work slowly or struggle to complete tasks
  • Complain of headaches or eye fatigue
  • Have a short attention span or seem easily distracted
  • Squint, cover one eye, or tilt their head
  • Show poor hand-eye coordination
  • Are sensitive to light

Common Eye Conditions in School-Age Children

Most vision concerns in school-age children are related to how the eyes focus and how clearly they see at distance and near. These issues often become noticeable as visual demands increase with reading, screens, and classroom learning. The most common conditions we evaluate include:
Most Common
Refractive Errors
Refractive errors affect how light focuses on the retina and are the most frequent cause of blurred vision in children. These conditions are easily identified during a comprehensive eye exam and treated with glasses or contact lenses. Early detection of refractive errors helps support learning, reading performance, and visual comfort at school and home.
Myopia
Nearsightedness
Clear vision up close with blurry distance vision. Myopia commonly develops during the early school years and may progress as children grow.
Hyperopia
Farsightedness
Difficulty seeing clearly up close, which can affect reading comfort, attention, and eye strain.
Astigmatism
Blurred or distorted vision at any distance due to an irregularly shaped cornea or lens.
Less Common
Eye Alignment & Vision Development Conditions
Some children may have conditions related to eye alignment or visual development. These are typically identified at a younger age but may still be monitored or managed as children grow.
Strabismus
Eye Misalignment
Occurs when the eyes do not align properly and point in different directions.
Amblyopia
Lazy Eye
Reduced vision in one eye that cannot be corrected with glasses alone and is most effectively treated when diagnosed early.
Children with known diagnoses or concerns in these areas are evaluated on a case-by-case basis or referred when appropriate.

Myopia Management for Children & Teens

Nearsightedness (myopia) is becoming increasingly common in school-age children and often progresses as the eyes continue to grow. Early myopia management can help slow this progression and support long-term visual comfort and eye health. As part of our pediatric services, we offer personalized myopia management programs tailored to your child’s age, prescription, and lifestyle. These programs may include:

  • Specialized soft contact lenses designed to help manage myopia progression

  • Prescription glasses, including advanced lens designs such as Stellest, developed to address myopia progression

  • Lifestyle and visual habit guidance, including screen use and outdoor time recommendations

Our goal is not to promise a cure, but to carefully manage how myopia changes over time through ongoing monitoring and evidence-based treatment options.

Recommended Eye Exam Schedule for Children

Routine eye exams play an important role in your child’s visual development, academic performance, and overall confidence. School vision screenings do not replace a comprehensive eye exam and often miss important vision issues. Leading medical organizations recommend comprehensive eye exams at:
  • 6–12 months of age
  • 3 years of age
  • Annually after age 5, or as recommended by your eye doctor
Children with nearsightedness or other vision concerns may require more frequent monitoring.
